Calvin Men's Lacrosse Motors Past Muskingum 16-5

NEW CONCORD, Oh. - Calvin got back on the winning track with a 16-5 victory at Muskingum College Saturday afternoon.

Calvin (2-2) jumped out to an 8-2 halftime lead and never looked back.

Sophomore Jacob Gandara (Santa Clarita, Ca./West Ranch HS) scored three first half goals and added two more to open the third quarter as the Knights rolled on to victory.

Gandara scored on five of the six shots he attempted while also collecting three ground balls.

Freshman Chase Sparling (Novi, Mich./Novi HS) had three goals, two assists and a career-high 13 ground balls. Senior Max Foster (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice HS) had a goal and two assists. Freshman Derrick Bittner (Milwaukee, Wisc./Wauwatosa East HS) tallied two goals and two ground balls. Junior Griffin Sparling (Novi, Mich./Novi HS) and senior Austin Bontreger (Fishers, Ind./Heritage Christian HS) had one goal apiece.

Senior Noah Nedd (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a big game with a goal, two assists and five ground balls while also causing two turnovers.

Sophomore Nathan Jindra (South Bend, Ind./John Adams HS) had a goal, two assists and two ground balls. Sophomore Noah Boelens contributed a goal, an assist and two ground balls while causing one turnover.

Sophomore Gerritt Kurtycz (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville HS) and freshman Evan Griffin (Hartland, Mich./Howell HS) shared time in goal with Kurtcyz posting seven saves and Griffin three saves.

Calvin won 17 of the 24 face offs and helped force Muskingum (2-1) into 29 turnovers.

"We played a very unselfish and discipline game today," said Calvin men's lacrosse coach Dave Hoger. "They guys played together and focused on making the good play which led to some great opportunities. I'm very proud of the way our team competed in all facets of the game. Our attack unit came out of its shell today. They played at a very high level and drove our offense."

Calvin returns to action on March 9 when it hosts Anderson University at 3 p.m. at Grand Rapids Christian High School.
