Calvin Sends Seniors Out With Scintillating Win at Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Calvin men's lacrosse team closed out its season on a winning note, defeating Kalamazoo 10-5 Saturday afternoon on the road.

Calvin pitched a fourth quarter shutout, outscoring the Hornets 5-0 over the final 15 minutes of play to gain the win. The Knights led 3-2 at halftime but were tied 5-5 at the end of the third quarter.

The Knights made good on a pair of man-up opportunities early in the fourth quarter however to gain the final momentum. Senior Chris Griffin (Hartland, Mich./Hartland HS) scored on a feed from freshman Andrew Gortsema (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and senior Joel Schaefer (Clarksville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian HS) scored moments later on a pass from junior Michael Winkler (La Quinta, Ca./Palm Desert HS) to give the Knights a 7-5 lead.

Winkler scored an unassisted goal with 8:52 remaining and Griffin scored just 52 seconds later to put the Knights up 9-5.

Sophomore Austin Bontreger (Fishers, Ind./Heritage Christian HS) completed the scoring, putting the ball in the back of the net on an assist from Winkler 5:04 left to play.

Also scoring goals for Calvin on Saturday were sophomore Max Foster (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice HS) and freshman Griffin Sparling (Novi, Mich./Novi HS). Junior Ethan Brown (Falmouth, ME/Falmouth HS) collected five ground balls and caused four turnovers. Freshman goalie Jon Gilbert (Indianapolis, Ind./Heritage Christian HS) had his best game in a Calvin uniform, saving nine of a possible 14 shots.

Griffin and Schaefer completed their four-year Calvin careers in style, finishing with three goals apiece with Schaefer also chalking up an assist.  

Griffin collected his fourth hat-trick performance of the season in the win. He completed his career with 101 goals, 74 assists and 175 points. He is the Calvin career record holder in all three categories.

Schaefer concluded his career with 80 goals, 26 assists and 106 points. He ranks second on the Calvin career list for goals and points.

Also concluding his career for Calvin on Saturday was senior Jake Hortsman (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS). Hortsman collected two ground balls in his final game as a Calvin College Knight.

"It was a great team win today," said Calvin men's lacrosse coach Dave Hoger. "The guys rallied around the fact that it was their last time getting to play together with this group. This senior group has done so much for our program and we are going to miss them moving forward. We are really excited for the momentum that we gained today heading into the offseason."

The Knights finish their 2017 season 5-11 overall and 1-6 in the MIAA.
