Calvin Men's Lacrosse Hands Heidelberg 8-6 Defeat

TIFFIN, Oh. - The Calvin men's lacrosse team handed Dave Hoger his first collegiate victory as a head coach Thursday evening as the Knights picked up an 8-6 win at Heidelberg University.

Calvin (1-1) rallied from a 3-1 deficit with five unanswered goals to take control of the game.

The Knights trailed 3-1 at the end of one quarter of play but scored three goals in the second quarter to take a 4-3 halftime lead. Sophomore Max Foster (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice HS) sandwiched a pair of goals in the second quarter surge around a man-up goal by freshman Andrew Gortsema (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS). Foster's second goal of the quarter came on a feed from senior Chris Griffin (Hartland, Mich./Hartland HS) and gave the Knights a 4-3 lead with 1:19 left in the first half.

Griffin then scored on a feed from senior Joel Schaefer (Clarksville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian HS) just 1:18 into the third quarter. Junior Michael Winkler (La Quinta, Ca./Palm Desert HS) scored his second goal of the game later in the quarter, converting a pass from Schaefer.

The Calvin lead swelled to 7-3 on an unassisted goal by sophomore Austin Bontreger (Fishers, Ind./Heritage Christian HS) early in the fourth quarter. After Heidelberg (0-2) scored a few minutes later, Winkler scored a key insurance goal with 8:43 remaining with Schaefer once again drawing an assist on the play.

Calvin held the 8-4 lead until the closing minute of the game when Heidelberg scored two goals in the final 31 seconds.

"We had a great week of practice that translated to the game tonight," said Hoger who is in his first year at the helm of the Knights after the game. "We played with poise and did the little things rights. It's always exciting to get the first win of the season and the guys are hungry to keep improving."

Calvin finished the game with a 36-18 shots at goal advantage. Winkler had three goals and Schaefer three assists. Horstman and junior Ethan Brown (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth HS) scooped up eight ground balls apiece. Brown also caused four Heidelberg turnovers. Junior Austin Roden (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was also 5-for-7 on faceoffs.

Freshman Mitchell Caldwell (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing HS) collected three saves in goal for the Knights.

Calvin is back in action on Saturday, traveling to DePauw University for a game scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
