Calvin Men's Golf Finishes Fourth In MIAA Spring Qualifier Opening Round

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin men's golf team took fourth place in the opening 18-hole round of the 54-hole MIAA Spring Qualifier Tournament Saturday evening at Watermark Country Club.

The 54-hole tournament is being used to determine the MIAA's automatic qualifier to next month's NCAA III Tournament competition.

Calvin posted a team score of 313 strokes, finishing two strokes back of third place Trine. Hope took second at 310 while Kalamazoo was first at 307.

Leading the Knights was freshman Andrew Lack (Northville, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central) with a round of 72. Lack's score landed him in third place overall individually. 

Senior Sam Kuiper (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) and sophomore Sam Holland (Novi, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central) were next as they both recorded an 80. 

Freshman Mike Battiste (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Forest Hills Central) noted an 81 and senior Alec DeJonge (Niles, Mich. / Brandywine) shot an 85.  

Head Coach Brian Bolt touched on the Knights performance on the day. "The course conditions led to higher scores for everyone today. We got off to a tough start in it on the back nine. Freshman Andrew Lack had a really good day, which kept us in it. We are not where we wanted to be, but are still in good position heading into the final two rounds." 

The Knights return to action on Friday as the compete in the second 18-hole round of the MIAA Spring Qualifier Tournament at Wuskowhan Players Club in West Olive, Mich. First tee off will be at 1 p.m.
