Calvin Men's Golf Team Victorious at Opening MIAA Jamboree

MARSHALL, Mich. - The Calvin men's golf team opened its 2015 MIAA season on a winning note, taking first place at the first MIAA Jamboree of the year with a team score of 308 strokes. Wednesday's MIAA Jamboree was the first of eight scheduled fall league tournaments and was hosted by Albion at the Medalist Golf Club.

Calvin finished three strokes ahead of Trine University in the team standings followed by Kalamazoo (312) in third, Hope in fourth (313) and Albion in fifth (318).

Calvin sophomore Ben VanScoyk (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) finished in a three-way tie for medalist honors with a round of 74. Senior Justin Crow (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a 77, sophomore John Van Noord (Troy/Oakland Christian HS) a 78, freshman Sam Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) a 79 and senior Jason Zeigler (Mount Gilead, OH/Gilead Christian HS) a round of 80.

"The course was playing difficult today," said Calvin men's golf coach Brian Bolt. "As a team we played very steady. We didn't get a lot of putts to fall but we played just well enough to get a narrow victory. Sometimes you have to grind out pars to get the most you can get out of a round and that was what we did today."

Calvin is back in action on September 15 when it competes at the second MIAA Jamboree which will be hosted by Olivet at the Bedford Valley Country Club.
