GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin men's basketball team will travel to Kalamazoo College on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. for a conference contest. This is the second meeting of the two teams this season as the Knights defeated the Hornets 83-71 in January.
The Teams: The Hornets are 6-16 overall and 3-8 in the MIAA. The Knights bring a 12-10 overall record and a 7-4 MIAA record into the competition.
The Coaches: Jay Smith is in his third year as the head coach of the Kalamazoo men's basketball program. Smith brought 31 years of collegiate coaching experience to Kalamazoo, including 10 years as a head coach at Grand Valley State University and Central Michigan University.Prior to Kalamazoo, Smith was an assistant coach at University of Detroit Mercy from 2008-16. Smith earned a bachelor's degree in physical education with a business minor at Saginaw Valley State University in 1984 and a master's degree in sports administration at Kent State in 1986. He played one year of basketball at Bowling Green State University (1989-90) before playing his final three years at Saginaw Valley State where the Cardinals.
Kevin Vande Streek is in his 22nd year as the head men's basketball coach at Calvin College and in his 28th year as a collegiate coach overall. In 26 years as a head coach, Vande Streek has compiled an overall won-loss record of 504-260. As a coach at Calvin, he has produced a record of 411-180 and is the all-time leader for victories by a Calvin men's basketball coach. He has led Calvin to nine MIAA regular season titles, 10 trips to the NCAA Division III Tournament, two appearances in the NCAA Division III semifinals and one national championship. He attended Ripon College in Wisconsin for a year, where he played one year of varsity basketball, before transferring to Dordt in Sioux Center, Iowa, where he was a three-year varsity player. He graduated from Dordt in 1981 and went on to earn a master's degree in physical education from the University of South Dakota in 1986.
The Players: For the Hornets, Tanner Blyly leads the team with a 37.5 three-point average, 27 steals, 78 assists and a 13.7 scoring average.
For the Knights, Derek DeVries leads the team with a 29.2 three-point average, an 82.5 free throw average, a 6.1 rebound average and a 18.6 scoring average.
