ADRIAN, Mich. - Calvin rolled to a 79-53 victory at Adrian to move back into a tie for fourth place in the MIAA standings with rival Hope.
The Knights (9-10 overall, 4-4 MIAA) used a 14-2 first half run in roaring out to a 49-28 halftime lead. Calvin scored the final seven points of the first half capped off by three-pointer by sophomore Emmett Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) shortly before the halftime buzzer to build a commanding lead.
Calvin limited Adrian to 36 percent field goal shooting in the second half while securing the road win.
The Knights shot 49.2 percent overall from the floor including 60 percent in the first half when the Knights were 18 of 30 from the field and 8 of 15 from three-point range.
Sophomore Thad Shymanski (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) hit double-digits in scoring for the second straight game, scoring 16 points on 6 of 9 shooting. Senior Austin Bykerk (Jenison, Mich./Unity Christian HS) tossed in 11 points and grabbed five rebounds while senior Carlos Amoros-Gutierrez (Wyoming, Mich./Wyoming HS) had 11 points and three assists off the bench.
Calvin placed 11 players into the scoring column as it featured a balanced scoring attack. Senior Jason Walter (Coloma, Mich./Coloma HS) just missed a double-double, recording nine points and nine rebounds. Junior Tony DeWitte (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) had eight points.
Calvin held a 40-22 rebounding advantage and was credited with 19 assists against only eight turnovers. Jeremy Kalonji had 19 points to lead the Bulldogs in a losing cause.
Saturday's game opened a three-game conference road swing for the Knights who travel to Alma Thursday (7:30 p.m.) and to Hope on Saturday (3 p.m.).
