Olivet Holds Off Calvin Comeback Bid 85-81

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin men's basketball team fell to Olivet 85-81 in a conference contest on Wednesday night at Van Noord Arena.  

The Knights came out strong with a run of six points. The Comets quickly tightened things up to make it an 8-8 game. Olivet on a good rhythm, went on a run of five to take the lead. The Knights struggled to stop the Comets as they went on another run to take the 23-12 lead. Calvin looking to make a comeback, went on a 5-0 run including a three-pointer from sophomore Thad Shymanski (Ada, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) to make it a six-point game. The comets responded, pulling ahead once again but not for long as the Knights fought back as senior Carlos Amoros-Gutierrez (Wyoming, Mich. / Wyoming) knocked down two three-pointers including one at the buzzer to make it a 38-32 game with Olivet leading.  

Both teams came out strong the second half exchanging points. Knights trailing 43-47, junior Derek DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Covenant Christian) put up a three-pointer to make it a one-point game. The Comets made a three throw, but Calvin answered with a strong drive to the hoop from freshman Carson Meulenberg (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Covenant Christian) to tie it up 48-48.  

The two teams continued battling as they rallied back and forth exchanging points. With under five minutes of play, Olivet began to pull ahead. The Knights fought back hard and with about a minute left of play as they trailed by six, junior Tony DeWitte (Grandville, Mich. / Calvin Christian) hit a triple to make it 78-75. Calvin repeatedly fouled to try and regain possession to take the lead, but fell short as Olivet walked away with the 85-81 win. 

Leading the Knights was DeVries with 17 points and eight rebounds and Shymanski with 27 points and four assists. Meulenberg had eight rebounds and junior Alex Bos (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) had five assists. 

The game was filled with free throws. Olivet was 30 of 43 at the line (.698) while Calvin was 15 of 23 (.652).

The Knights return to action on Saturday as they travel to Adrian to take on the Bulldogs at 3 p.m.
