Calvin Takes Down Adrian in MIAA Opener

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin men's Basketball team defeated Adrian College 78-55 in its first conference matchup of the season. 

Both teams came out competitive as the two exchanged points back and forth keeping it a tight contest. Tied at 6-6, junior Alex Bos (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) drove to the hoop, making the layup in which he drew a foul sending him to the line and he knocked down the free throw to put the Knights up by three. 

The Knights went on a run of nine points which included a jump shot and layup from junior Derrick DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Covenant Christian) to take the 20-11 lead. The Bulldogs called a timeout to try and redeem themselves, but the Knights continued their momentum extending their lead to 28-15. 

With the final minutes of the first half, the Bulldogs went on a run of six points to tighten the score to 28-21. A pair of jump shots from DeVries and sophomore Thad Shymanski (Ada, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) gave Calvin an 11-point lead. Calvin knocked down four more points to close out the half with the 38-25 lead. 

As the second half began, the two teams exchanged points. The Bulldogs tried to make a comeback narrowing the lead to within nine, but the Knights answered with a run of four points. 

The Knights, using their momentum from the first half, continued to pull ahead as DeVries knocked down a three-pointer followed by a jump shot and Calvin took the 18-point lead. Adrian struggled to get back in it as Calvin continued to pull away and they ran away with it 78-55.

Leading the Knights was Devries with 19 points and six rebounds. Shymanski had 13 points and five assists. Senior Austin Bykerk (Jenison, Mich. / Unity Christian) had 14 points. Freshman Carson Meulenberg (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Covenant Christian) had 16 rebounds. 

Calvin improves its record to 6-6 and 1-0 in the MIAA. 

The Knights will host Alma College Saturday at 3 p.m. for a conference matchup.
