WHITEWATER, Wis. - Calvin fell to nationally-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater 68-63 Friday night. Ranked 12th nationally, UW-Whitewater led just 31-30 at halftime over the upset-minded Knights.
UW-Whitewater (6-0) used a 17-4 run to open the second half to build a 48-34 lead. Calvin (6-6) then fought back.
Trailing 55-42 with 9:28 remaining, Calvin used a three-pointer from junior Derrick DeVries (Grand Rapids, Michigan/Covenant Christian HS) to close within 10. Junior Tony DeWitte (Grandville, Mich./Grandville Calvin Christian HS) swished a three-pointer to cut the deficit to single digits at 57-48. A steal by freshman Carson Meulenberg (Grand Rapids, Mich./Covenant Christian HS) led to a fast-break dunk by senior Austin Bykerk (Jenison, Mich./Unity Christian HS) and the Knights trailed 57-50 with 6:19 remaining.
Bykerk converted a bucket inside and sophomore Thad Shymanski (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) drilled a triple from the left wing, bringing Calvin within 61-57.
Calvin trailed 61-59 and later 66-63. The Knights had a shot at a tying three-point shot after a missed Whitewater free throw but the Calvin three-point attempt in the closing seconds was off the mark.
DeVries had 21 points to lead all scorers. He also had eight rebounds. Bykerk scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds. Bos had a team-high nine rebounds. Shymanski had seven points, four assists and a pair of steals. Melvin Brown Jr. led Wisconsin-Whitewater with 19 points.
Calvin shot 39.0 percent from the floor nd converted 12 of 15 (.800) of its free throw tries. Both teams were credited with 38 rebounds.
Calvin travels to seventh-ranked Wisconsin-Oshkosh on Saturday for a 4 p.m. (EST) game.
