GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin men's basketball team picked up its third consecutive win on Wednesday night with a 75-54 win over Anderson University. The Knights improve to 4-3 on the season before hitting the road for the month of December.
The Ravens, members of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference, fall to 1-4 overall. Calvin is the fourth MIAA opponent of the season for Anderson as the Ravens defeated Kalamazoo earlier this month before falling to Adrian and Trine. A year ago the two teams met at Anderson with the Ravens prevailing 102-92.
Junior Tony DeWitte (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian) led the Knights with 14 points, followed by junior Derrick DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Covenant Christian) who finished with 13 points, 11 of them coming in the first half. Senior Austin Bykerk (Jenison, Mich./Unity Christian) posted 12 points. Senior Jason Walter (Coloma, Mich./Coloma) and DeVries each collected a team-high six rebounds. Sophomore Thad Shymanski (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) added eight points and four assists.
Calvin took an early 8-2 lead with buckets from Bykerk, Shymanski and DeVries. After a Ravens basket, DeWitte responded with a three-point field goal to put Calvin up by seven early in the contest. As the midpoint of the neared, Calvin extended its lead to 21-8 with a five-point sequence with a dunk by Bykerk followed by a triple from DeVries. After a Ravens bucket followed by back-to-back baskets by DeVries, Anderson called its first timeout, trailing by 15 with 9:40 left in the first half.
Anderson knocked down a three out of the break, but DeWitte answered with a jumper for the Knights. After nearly four scoreless minutes of play, senior Isaiah McLaughlin (Shelby Township, Mich./Eisenhower) sunk a three to kick off a seven-point Calvin run. The Ravens responded with six straight points to cut the deficit to 15 with as the end of the half neared. The two teams exchanged points, and Calvin headed into the halftime break with a 38-23 advantage.
The Ravens came out strong in the second half, stringing together seven straight points to cut Calvin's lead to single digits. Shymanski broke up the run with a jump shot to bring the score to 41-30. With just under 15 minutes remaining, another points from DeWitte and Walter earned Calvin a 14-point lead.
With seven-and-a-half minutes left to play, Calvin regained its 20-point lead with a bucket by Walter. After four consecutive points from the Ravens, the Knights staged a seven-point run to lead 67-44 with four-and-a-half minutes left on the clock. Senior Carlos Amoros-Gutierrez (Wyoming, Mich./Wyoming) hit a three, followed by a dunk by freshman Carson Meulenberg (Grand Rapids, Mich./Calvin Christian) before a layup from Bykerk.
The deficit was too large for the Ravens to overcome and Calvin rolled to a 21-point home victory. Calvin shot 46% from the field, while Anderson posted a 32.1% field goal percentage.
The Knights are back in action on December 7 when they travel to Wisconsin-Whitewater for another nonconference match-up. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. CST.
