The Calvin men's basketball team is set to open its season on Thursday night when the the Knights host the Grace Christian Tigers inside Calvin's Hoogeboom Gymnasium. Admission will be free to the public.
In the MIAA preseason coaches' poll released earlier today, Calvin was picked to finish fourth in the MIAA. Trine was picked to finish first, receiving three first place votes followed by Hope in second place. The Flying Dutchmen also received three first place votes. Olivet was picked to finish third with the Comets receiving the remaining two first place votes with Calvin finishing fourth.
Calvin returns eight letterwinners from last year's team including its top two scorers in junior Derrick DeVries and senior Austin Bykerk. A 6-5 forward, DeVries averaged 15.6 points and 5.2 rebounds a game while connecting on 46.4 percent of his field goal attempts. He was named to the 2017-18 All-MIAA second team. A 6-8 center, Bykerk averaged 11.9 points and 6.6 rebounds a game last season.
