HOLLAND, Mich. – The Calvin men's basketball team fell on the road at Hope on Wednesday, 77-72. Calvin moves to 5-9 on the year and 1-2 in MIAA play. The loss snapped a two-game winning streak in the rivalry.
The Knights opened the game on a 13-0 run in the first four minutes. Sophomore Derrick DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Covenant Christian) drained two three-point baskets in the run.
The Flying Dutchmen cut the Calvin lead to 30-26, but Calvin responded with a 12-2 run. Junior Jason Walter (Coloma, Mich./Coloma) led the Knights with five points in the run.
A late Hope basket cut the lead to 42-30 at halftime.
Hope opened the second half on a 10-0 run to get right back in the game. Junior Austin Bykerk (Jenison, Mich./Unity Christian) snapped the skid with a jump shot.
The Maroon and Gold pushed the lead up to 63-51 with over eight minutes remaining in the game with a jump shot from Austin Bykerk.
A 13-2 run for Hope got the Dutch within one point with 5:26 remaining.
Hope got its first lead of the game at 71-69 with 1:02 remaining in the game.
A three-point basket from Austin Bykerk cut the lead to three points, but Hope made six free throws in the final minute to secure the victory.
"It was a hard-fought game and a tough loss," said Calvin head coach Kevin Vande Streek. "I thought they came out of the locker room in the second half with great energy. We did not, there was a pretty significant difference right off the bat. I thought we recovered well. We talked about how rebounding was going to be the most important factor on who was going to win the game at halftime we were up 21-13 and we were outrebounded 28-16 in the second half."
Austin Bykerk led the Knights with 15 points on Wednesday. Derrick DeVries and Jason Walters both finished with 14 points. Junior Carlos Amoros-Gutierrez (Wyoming, Mich./Wyoming) was right behind with 13 points.
Walters had himself a block party against the Dutch with nine blocks. He also finished with seven rebounds, an assist and a steal.
Sophomore Alex Bos (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) led Calvin with nine rebounds.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when the Knights finally return to Van Noord Arena against Trine.
