Calvin Bounces Bulldogs To Set up Rivalry Showdown With Hope

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin got back on the winning track with a 79-67 victory over Adrian Saturday afternoon at Van Noord Arena.

The victory sets up an early-season showdown for first place in the MIAA standings with rival Hope Wednesday night at Van Noord Arena as Calvin is now 5-1 in the league standings while Hope remained unbeaten at 6-0 with a 78-58 win at Kalamazoo.

Calvin (10-7 overall) started slowly but finished the first half with a flourish to take a 34-21 halftime lead.

The Knights trailed 15-14 with 7:51 remaining in the first half but outscored the visiting Bulldogs (7-10 overall, 1-5 MIAA) 20-6 over the final 7:21 of the first half to take control of the game.

Senior Cam Denney (Bluffton, Ind./Norwell HS) connected on a pair of triples in the run while sophomore Luke Van Boxel (Montague, Mich./Montague HS) added a triple of his own to give the Knights a double-digit lead at the break.

Calvin stretched its lead to 21 points on three free throws by freshman Tony DeWitte (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) with 8:17 remaining.

Adrian countered with a 17-5 run to cut the gap down to single digits at 66-57 with 3:14 showing but got no closer as Calvin hit seven free throws in the final 1:38 to seal the win.

"That was a really good game for our team," said Calvin men's basketball coach Kevin Vande Streek. "We had a little bit of a slow start in the first five minutes. We started to figure it and played well after that. Adrian presents a different style of play and we had to come up with a different game plan for them. I thought our guys did a good job of executing our plan."

Calvin placed four players in double-digits in scoring led by Denney who had 20 ponts and six rebounds. Junior Tony Canonie (South Haven, Mich./South Haven HS) and junior Michael Wilks (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) had 12 points apiece while freshman Deerrick DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Covenant Christian HS) tossed in a career-high 10 points off the bench. Calvin's bench outscored Adrian's reserves 26-6.

Senior Michael Welch (Stevensville, Mich./Lakeshore HS) also had a strong game in reserve with five points and nine rebounds.

Calvin outrebounded Adrian 32-27.

Justin Webster led Adrian with 22 points while Davonte Harris had 19 and Keyon Rainey 14.

Calvin shot 55.6 percent from the field including a season-high 50 percent (7 of 14) from three-point range with five different players converting at least one triple. The Knights were also 22 of 29 (.759) at the charity stripe as Calvin outscored the Bulldogs by 11 points at the free throw line.

Wednesday's game against Hope at Van Noord Arena is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. The game will feature the 194th meeting between the two rivals in men's basketball in a series that sees Hope leading 100-93.
