Matt Schepel is in his third year as an assistant coach with the Calvin baseball program working specifically with the Knights outfielders. Schepel joined the coaching staff after a prolific baseball career with the Knights.

As a member of the Calvin baseball program, Schepel was a two-time first team All-MIAA selection while also receiving All-MIAA second team honors twice. As a senior in 2014, Schepel was named to the ABCA All-Mideast Region first team as well as to the All-Mideast Region first team after batting .394 with 38 runs batted, 36 runs scored, 33 base on balls and 21 extra-base hits.

As a Knight, Schepel played third base, shortstop and second base while also seeing starting action in the outfield.

Schepel finished his Calvin career as the school's all-time leader in total bases (298), hits (177), runs scored (134), runs batted in (130), home runs (19), doubles (33) and base on balls (108) and is tied for the all-time lead in triples (11).

A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, Schepel has served as an assistant football coach with the Grand Rapids Christian High School program and is currently the school's head junior varsity football coach. He was part of the coaching staff that led Grand Rapids Christian to the 2012 MHSAA Division III State football title.

He recently completed his bachelor's degree at Calvin within the school's Department of Kinesiology. 

"Scheps is an integral part of our coaching staff and a guy that makes my job a lot easier," said Calvin head baseball coach John Rypel.  "I know he has a bright future in this profession and will make a tremendous Head Coach when God provides him that opportunity."
