GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin men's baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader against Adrian Friday afternoon at at wind-swept Calvin Field.
Adrian 11, Calvin 3
The nationally-ranked Bulldogs started of strong with a homerun to take the early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
The Knights answered in the bottom of the first as junior Jeremy Clark (San Diego, Ca./Mt. Carmel HS) doubled to center field to bring in sophomore Ricky Padilla (Poway, Ca./Poway HS) and senior Beau Redfield (Cedar Springs, Mich./Northpointe Christian HS). Freshman Andrew Hung (Waterford, Mich./Waterford HS) then reached first off of a fielding error and Clark ran home to give Calvin the 3-1 edge.
Adrian answered with three runs in the second and pulled away by scoring three runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh. The Bulldogs outhit Calvin 18-5 in the contest.
Clark went 3-for-3 at the plate in the loss including a pair of doubles. Senior Trevor VanDuyn (Jenison, Mich./Jenison HS) went the first five innings for the Knights and took the loss to dip to 3-1 on the year.
Adrian 12, Calvin 3
Adrian scored seven runs in the opening two innings to take control of the game. The Bulldogs collected 12 hits and used four Calvin errors to gain the win.
Calvin had nine hits in the loss with two coming from Ricky Padilla and two coming from freshman Ryan Petersen (Glen Ellyn, Il./Glenbard West HS). Jeremy Clark and freshman Nick Vogel (Hartford, Wisc./Hartford HS) both had doubles for Calvin.
Freshman Hayden White (Spring Valley, Ca./Grossmont HS) went the first three innings and took the loss, falling to 1-1 on the season/
NEXT UP: The Knights return to action on Saturday as they travel to Adrian for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. at Nicolay Field to complete the four-game conference series.
