DEFIANCE, Oh. - Calvin dropped a 3-1 non-conference decision at Defiance Wednesday afternoon.
The game featured strong pitching from both sides. The Knights (9-13) outhit Defiance 10-5 but stranded 13 baserunners.
Calvin had tying runs on base in the top of the ninth but was unable to bring a runner home.
Defiance (13-8-1) scored all three of its runs in the second inning, using four hits and a wild pitch.
Calvin scored its lone run in the top of the eighth as senior Ryan Pena (Lake Forest, Ca./J. Serra Catholic HS) led off with a bunt single and later scored on a wild pitch.
Pena went 3-for-5 at the plate while senior Beau Redfield (Cedar Springs, Mich./Northpointe Christian HS) was 3-for-4 at the dish. Freshman Nick Vogel (Hartford, Wisc./Hartford HS) had two hits including a double.
Calvin used eight pitchers with freshman Eli Bristol (Stillwater, Okla./Stillwater HS) getting the start and striking out one in his first varsity collegiate experience.
COACHES QUOTE: "We had a nice staff day for our pitchers," said Calvin head baseball coach Kevin VanDuyn. "We need to become more confident hitters with runners in scoring position. We had scoring chances today. We just did not capitalize on our opportunities."
NEXT UP: Calvin is scheduled to host Adrian in a conference doubleheader on Thursday at 2 p.m.
