Calvin Falls to Rose-Hulman in Pitcher's Duel

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Calvin dropped a 3-2 decision Friday night to host Rose-Hulman.

Rose-Hulman (5-3) scratched across the game's first run in the bottom of the fourth inning and added two more in the seventh to build a 3-0 lead.

Calvin (2-2) broke through for a run in the top of the eighth on an RBI groundout by junior Quinn Hyndiuk (Brookfield, Wisc./Brookfield East HS). The groundout plated senior Ryan Pena (Lake Forest, Ca./Junipero Serra Catholic) who had led off the inning with a single.

Pena delivered an RBI single in the ninth that brought the Knights within a run. With runners at first and third and two outs Calvin then attempted a double steal but Pena was cut down before the Knights could score from third.

Pena and freshman Matt Raymond (Chicago, Il./Loyola Academy) had two hits apiece for Calvin in the loss. Raymond had a double for the Knights as did freshman Andrew Hung (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Mott).

Senior Logan Walker (Imlay City, Mich./Lapeer East HS) got the start and took the loss despite allowing only one run.

COACHES QUOTE: "We had another solid performance," said head coach Kevin VanDuyn. "For the second straight game we did not commit an error in the field. Our pitching today was excellent and kept us in the game on a cold evening. I thought we hung tough at the plate against a very good (Rose-Hulman) pitcher. We went for it a bit with the double-steal at the end. It didn't work out tonight but that aggressive culture is what we are working to establish."

NEXT UP: Calvin will face Rose-Hulman at noon on Saturday and then meet DePauw at 3 p.m. with both games set to be played at Rose-Hulman.
