Bulldogs Bite Baseball in MIAA Tournament

ADRIAN, Mich. – The Calvin baseball team opened MIAA Tournament play at Adrian on Wednesday and faced the MIAA champion Bulldogs. Adrian walked away with a 9-2 victory and sent Calvin to 16-24 on the year. Calvin will play Hope in an elimination game at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday at Adrian.

Calvin struck first on Wednesday with two runs in the top of the first inning.

Junior Ryan Pena (Lake Forest, Calif./J Serra Catholic) doubled to shortstop that scored junior Jonathan Keane (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central) and freshman Ricky Padilla (Poway, Calif./Poway).

The Bulldogs took the lead with three runs in the bottom half of the first inning.

Adrian added two more runs in the fifth inning, three runs in the sixth inning and one in the seventh.

Ricky Padilla is now riding a 15-game hit streak with two hits on Wednesday.

Jonathan Keane recorded six strikeouts in the start on the mound.

Senior Ryan Stewart (Shelby, Mich./Parkway Christian) had an effective eighth inning on the mound. Stewart recorded one strikeout.

Ricky Padilla, Ryan Pena and sophomore Quinn Hyndiuk (Elm Grove, Wis./Brookfield East) all had two hits for Calvin.

Thursday will be the fifth meeting of the year between Calvin and Hope. Both teams won two games in the rivalry in March. Last year, Calvin defeated Hope in the elimination game, 18-2.
