Baseball Announces 20 Newcomers For 2018 Season

The Calvin College baseball team is announcing the addition of 20 newcomers for the 2018 season.  

"I am excited for this group of young men," said head coach John Rypel. "I think we added some guys who will help on the varsity level and I am looking forward to watching them grow in their time here at Calvin.  I know our returning players are anxious to meet these guys and welcome them into our baseball family."

James Boice - Sienna Heights University - Kelloggsville, Mich.

Boice is transferring after spending the last three seasons at Sienna Heights University.  In the spring of 2017, he made 23 appearances for the Saints.  Boice graduated from Kelloggsville High School where he was a 1st Team All-Conference selection.

Henry Breems - RHP - Grand Rapids Christian High School - Grand Rapids, Mich.

Breems posted a 1.24 ERA with 57 strikeouts this past spring. He was an All-Conference, All-District and All Area selection.

Solomon Gray - C/INF - West Ottawa High School - Holland, Mich.

Gray finished his senior season with a .365 batting average with eight doubles and one home-run.  He was an All-Conference and All-Area Selection.

Jacob Hoffman - RHP - Deerfield High School - Deerfield, Ill.

Hoffman made 12 appearances this spring for Deerfield and collected 28 strikeouts in 24 innings of work.

Jon Hull - INF - Lansing Christian High School - Mason, Mich.

Hull finished the 2017 season with a .375 batting average with six extra base hits and 23 stolen bases.  He was an All-District and All-Conference selection.

Joey Lepidi - INF - Grosse lle High School - Grosse lle, Mich.

Lepidi finished the 2017 campaign with a .415 batting average and 10 stolen bases while only committing three errors in the field.  For his efforts, he was a First Team All-Conference, All League, and All News Herald selection.

Matt Lobbes - OF/LHP - South Christian High School - Grand Rapids, Mich.

Lobbes hit .325 with nine extra base hits and 17 RBIs this spring.  He also collected 57 strikeouts in 56 innings of work on the mound.  For his efforts, Matt was an All-Conference and All-Area Selection.

Zach Ludwig - OF - Three Rivers High School - Three Rivers, Mich.

Ludwig finished his senior campaign with five doubles, 12 RBIs, and 12 Stolen Bases.  He also committed zero errors in center-field.  

Braden Menini - INF - St Charles North - St Charles, Ill.

Menini was a member of a St Charles team that finished the season with a 30-5 record.  He competes in the summer for the Kane County Elite Team where he hit at a clip of .300.

Mitch Mustert - OF - Grand Rapids Christian High School - Grand Rapids, Mich.

Mustert finished his senior campaign with a 398-batting average.  He also collected nine doubles, three triples, one home-run, and 20 RBIs.  For his efforts, Mitch was an All-State selection.

Dan Opem - C/1B - Glenbard South High School - Ellyn, Ill.

Opem collected 30 hits this spring with seven doubles, one homerun, and 25 RBIs.  In the summer, he competes for Cangelosi Baseball.

Ricky Padilla - C/INF - Poway High School - Poway, Calif.

Padilla finished the spring of 2017 with two home-runs, 10 RBIs, and committed only two errors all season.  In the summer, he competes for the San Diego Crush travel program.

Ryan Pena - OF/RHP - Saddleback College/J Serra Catholic High School - San Juan Capistrano, Calif.

Pena is transferring to Calvin after spending last spring at Saddleback Community College where he helped the Gauchos to a record of 26-17. In 21 games, he collected 10 hits and one homerun with four RBIs.  Ryan prepped at J Serra Catholic High School and was a two-time Trinity League All-Conference selection.  As a senior, the J Serra Catholic team finished ranked #5 in the country by Maxpreps.com.

Mark Primus - RHP - Grand Rapids Christian High School, Grand Rapids, Mich.

Primus tossed 56 innings this spring and posted a 0.75 ERA.  He also collected 56 strikeouts and yielded just 16 base on balls.  Mark was an All-Conference and All Area selection for his efforts.

Caleb Punter - OF - Webster Schroeder High School - Webster, N.Y.

Punter hit at a clip of .402 this past spring with seven doubles.  He was a first team All-County selection.  The Webster Schroeder baseball team finished the season ranked 11th in the state of New York. 

Chris Ralph - INF/RHP - Waubonsie Valley High School - Naperville, Ill.

Ralph finished the spring of 2017 with a .342 batting average with 12 extra base hits and 13 RBIs. He competes in the summer for the Illinois Hawks.

Grayson Rotter - INF/RHP - Saugatuck High School - Saugatuck, Mich.

Rotter hit .376 with nine doubles, 14 stolen bases, and one home-run in the spring of 2017.  On the mound, he posted a 2.31 ERA in 39 innings of work.  Grayson was an All-District and All-Conference selection.

Emmett Warners - INF - Grand Rapids Christian High School - Grand Rapids, Mich.

Warners collected 13 extra base hits and eight stolen bases this past spring.  He was a three-time All-Conference selection.

Kyle Weir - C/RHP - Walled Lake Central High School - Wolverine Lake, Mich.

Weir collected five doubles and 10 RBIs this past spring for Walled Lake.  In the summer, he competes for the Oakland Whitecaps and posted a 3.24 ERA on the mound in 2017.

Conor Whipple - INF - Mason High School – Leslie, Mich.

Whipple was a 2016 graduate of Mason High School.  As a senior, he hit .315 with six doubles and was an All-Conference Selection.

The Calvin College baseball team begins the non-traditional season on Sept. 9th.  The 2018 campaign kicks off on March 3rd when the Knights travel to Indiana for a doubleheader versus Oberlin College.
