GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin baseball team jumped on the Scarlet Hawks on Tuesday to improve to 9-14 in 2017. The Knights defeated Illinois Tech 10-2 snap a four-game winning streak for Illinois Tech. The 10 runs are the third most on the season.

The Knights scored seven runs in the first inning. Junior Nate DeZwaan (Hamilton, Mich./Holland Christian) doubled to the gap in left field to score senior Mike Kempton (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg). Junior Johnny Delgado (Whittier, Calif. /Whittier) scored Nate DeZwaan. Senior Colton Wolfe (Eaton Rapids, Mich./Eaton Rapids) scored on a balk with the bases loaded. Junior Kyle Houts (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake) doubled to center field to score Johnny Delgado and sophomore Jonathan Keane (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central). Kyle Houts beat out the tag at the plate to make it a 6-0 game. Mike Kempton hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Ryan Stewart.

Colton Wolfe scored on a wild pitch in the second inning.

The Scarlet Hawks cut into the Calvin lead with a run in the sixth and seventh inning to cut the lead to 8-2.

The Maroon and Gold added two more runs in the eighth inning. Colton Wolfe Scored sophomore Steven Dogger (Holland, Mich./Holland Calvary) on a shot that didn't leave the infield. Freshman Jeremy Clark (San Diego, Calif./Mt. Carmel) singled to right field to score senior Patrick Avila (Lakewood, Calif./Valley Christian).

Calvin sent eight pitchers to the mound on Tuesday. Sophomore Jimmy Dirksen (Portage, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian) earned his first victory of the season. Freshman Mike Kool (Sturgis, Mich./Centreville)and sophomore Clay Francisco (Delton, Mich./Thornapple-Kellogg) both tallied two strikeouts.

Nate DeZwaan finished with a game-high three hits.

Calvin returns to action on Thursday at Albion.
