GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin baseball team swept its arch-rival Hope on Friday afternoon at Calvin. The Knights defeated the Flying Dutchmen in the seven-inning game, 5-2. The Maroon and Gold smashed the visitors in the second game 16-4. Calvin improves to 8-8 on the year and 4-2 in the MIAA, while Hope falls to 10-6 and 3-3 in MIAA play.
"Obviously our goal is to sweep at home," said Calvin head coach John Rypel. "Now we have to go on the road tomorrow. We know that they are going to play a lot and be ready to go. We just have to take care of the baseball. I am happy with our fielding today, I believe today was the first day that we didn't have an error in either game."
The Knights got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning in game one. Junior Nate DeZwaan (Hamilton, Mich./Hamilton) singled to left center to score junior Matt Kotva (Elkhart, Ind./Concord) from second base. The Maroon and Gold took advantage of the first of seven Hope errors when junior Johnny Salgado (Whittier, Calif./Whittier) was able to cross senior Colton Wolfe (Eaton Rapids, Mich./Eaton Rapids) across home plate. Nate DeZwaan scored on an infield single from Logan Marshall.

The final Calvin run crossed the plate in the bottom of the fourth inning, when Matt Kotva scored off an error at third base.
The Flying Dutchmen would put a dent in the Calvin lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning. Sophomore Jordon Fairchild (Muskegon, Mich./Oakridge) doubled into the gap in right center to score freshman Jared Blum (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) and junior Codey Houts (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake).
Sophomore Clay Francisco (Delton, Mich./Thornapple Kellogg) threw four solid innings for Calvin to pick up the win. Freshman Trevor VanDuyn (Jenison, Mich./Jenison HS) pitched the final three innings to collect the save.
Sophomore Nick Holt (Muskegon, Mich./Catholic Central) fell to 2-2 for Hope, Holt threw 5.1 innings and finished with only one earned run.
The Orange and Blue struck first in game two with a single through the left side of the infield by junior Landon Brower (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) in the first inning that scored senior JP Batts (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake).
Calvin took the lead back in the second inning. Junior Kyle Houts (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake) singled through the middle of the infield to score sophomore Jonathan Keane (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central). Sophomore Miles Kuperus (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) then scored Johnny Salgado.
The Knights broke things open in the third inning with nine runs. Colton Wolfe started things scoring off a Hope error. Kyle Houts singled in Matt Kotva. A single from Johnny Salgado scored Jonathan Keane. A single through the middle of the infield scored Kyle Houts. Senior Mike Kempton (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg) scored Mile Kuperus and Johnny Salgado with a single into the gap in right field. Colton Wolfe sent a blast down the leftfield line to score Mike Kempton. Nate DeZwaan scored on an error and Kyle Houts ended the scoring spree with a single to right field to score Matt Kotva.
In the fifth inning, sophomore Beau Redfield (Cedar Springs, Mich./Northpointe Christian) singled to right field to score Keane. Mike Kempton doubled into the gap in left field to score freshman Logan Marshall (Plymouth, Mich./Salem).
The Flying Dutchmen got two runs back in the sixth inning. Junior Michael Barnett (Saline, Mich./Saline) scored on a balk with the bases loaded. Sophomore Tanner Gilmore (Murrieta, Calif./Alta Loma) then crossed home plate on an infield shot.
The final Hope run of the game came in the fourth inning when sophomore Bradley Kotenko (Macomb, Mich./Lutheran North) scored on a wild pitch.
Jonathan Keane finished the game with a blast over the leftfield fence to give Calvin a 16-4 victory.
Junior Jamie Bristol (Grand Rapids, Mich./Calvin Christian) earned the victory for Calvin. Bristol recorded five strikeouts in five innings on the mound. Junior Ryan Stewart (Shelby, Mich./Parkway Christian) and sophomore Jimmy Dirksen (Portage, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian) finished the game for Calvin.
Senior Michael Thomas (Troy, Mich./Troy) fell to 0-1 on the season for Hope.
Kyle Houts finished game two with a career-high five hits for Calvin.
The 20 hits is a season-high for Calvin. The 16 runs is the most Calvin has scored since April 1, 2016, when Calvin defeated Hope, 16-11. The 20 hits and 16 runs are the most Hope has given up this season.
The two teams return to action for a double header at Hope on Saturday.
