Wolfe Launches Record-Breaking Home Run as Calvin Baseball Gains Split at Maryville College

MARYVILLE, TN - Calvin split a non-conference doubleheader at Maryville College Monday night, dropping game one 8-7 and winning game two 7-4.

In game one, Calvin fell behind 4-2 after one inning of play but used a three-run second to take 5-4 lead. Senior Colton Wolfe (Eaton Rapids, Mich./Eaton Rapids HS) belted a two-run RBI double.

Sophomore Jonathan Keane (Brookfield, Wisc./Brookfield Central HS) brought home another run with an RBI groundout. Maryville (14-12) responded with four runs in the third to build an 8-5 lead. Calvin came back with a two-run to right field in the fifth by junior Johnny Salgado (Whittier, Ca./Whitter HS) to trim the deficit to one.

Calvin went down in order in both the sixth and seventh as Maryville blocked a comeback bid by the Knights. Freshman Micah Berlage (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) went the first 2.1 innings and took the loss for the Knights. Freshman David Dahms (Darien, Il./Hinsdale South HS) went the final 3.1 innings for the Knights in relief.

Senior Mike Kempton (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg HS) continued his red-hot start at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Junior Matt Kotva (Elkhart, Ind./Concord HS) had two hits as did Salgado with Salgado driving in four runs.

Game two was a scheduled nine-inning contest. After falling behind early 1-0, Calvin came up with two runs in the top of the fifth on an RBI double to right by Wolfe and a sacrifice fly by Kotva. The Knights (3-5) came up with a big surge in the eighth as senior Pat Avila (Lakewood, Ca./Valley Christian HS) and Kempton delivered back-to-back run-scoring singles.

Wolfe then unloaded a three-run homer to left, giving the Knights a 7-1 lead. The home run by Wolfe was the 20th of his Calvin career, pushing him past Matt Schepel and into first place on the Calvin career home run list. Maryville pushed across two runs in the bottom of the eighth and one in the ninth but got no closer as the Knights sealed the win.

Freshman Trevor VanDuyn (Jenison, Mich./Jenison HS) was credited with the win as he tossed 3.1 innings of relief. VanDuyn is now 2-1 on the season. Sophomore Jimmy Dirksen (Portage, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian HS) went the first 3.1 innings while freshman Justin Paauwe (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and sophomore Logan Walker (Imlay City, Mich./Lapeer East HS) also saw time in relief.

Kempton went 3-for-5 in the win to boost his season batting average to .387. Wolfe also went 3-for-5 with fourn runs batted in. Avila and freshman Mike Kool (Sturgis, Mich./Centreville HS) also had two hits apiece as part of Calvin's 12-hit attack.
