GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin College Men’s Hockey team is only 11 games into its first season in ACHA Division 1. The recent results have been an encouraging sign about the programs future in the top division in the ACHA. In the most recent weekly national ranking produced today by ACHA Division 1, the team made its debut at #24.
The Knights were a powerhouse in ACHA Division 3 over the past few seasons and lost in last year’s National Championship game. The decision was made to apply for a move to ACHA Division 1 in search of a more consistent level of competition.
Featuring 11 freshmen in the lineup, Calvin started the season with a 2-5 record but has rebounded with a four game unbeaten streak to pull the record to 5-5-1. Head Coach Mike Petrusma anticipated the early season challenges for his young team, “After losing 7 of our top 8 scorers and a total of 13 players from last year’s team, we obviously knew we would be a really young team this year. I expected to have some issues with on ice chemistry early in the season and when you combine that with eight straight games against top 25 teams to open the season, we knew it would be a challenge. The guys are really starting to play well together now and our team is starting to come together on and off the ice.”
The team has a rare weekend off and will return to action on November 15 with a trip to Kalamazoo, Michigan to take on Western Michigan University. The next home game is on Friday November 17 against Rochester College at 8:00 PM ET at Eagles Ice Center.
